Community Presbyterian Church includes people from many different
backgrounds.
Some have a traditional Presbyterian background in worship – which
tends to be quiet and meditative with hymns that emphasize our having
been made into one body, one community through Jesus Christ. A
relationship with God tends to grow organically through time spent in
prayer, Bible Study, and service to one another and others. A more
reserved people, they tend to lack terms to describe the evolving
closeness and love they have for God.
Others have an evangelical background in worship – which tends to be
more expressive, emphasizes opportunities to accept and receive Jesus
Christ as Lord and Savior, with hymns and choruses that emphasize a
personal relationship with Jesus. Testimonies to God’s work in their
lives is some times a part of their worship services. They
tend to use language that expresses a growing intimacy with God. Such
a growing closeness with God can occur as a result of a new commitment
or recommitment to Jesus. This is often accompanied by a turning away
from things, activities and people that kept them from the Lord. It is
also a relationship that can deepen over time as life is lived out in
service to Jesus Christ.
Still others have a charismatic background in worship – which tends to
much more expressive – openly showing their feelings with music that
focuses on words from the Bible that have choruses enabling people to
meditate on the major thoughts of the songs or choruses. The music is
often accompanied by raised hands, clapping, and moving to the beat –
much like ballet dancing does in relationship to the music being sung.
They tend to use very personal terms when talking about their
relationship with God. Their worship invites people to enter into an
experience with God Himself.
The worship of the church includes styles reflective of the different
backgrounds while being inclusive of people with different backgrounds
or preferences.
